I haven't been packaging up the books until today, I was leaving that to my husband/partner. I have been behind in my postings lately because I had the flu. Look under used options for deepgreenbooks.) (all of these books can be found at amazon.ca. In a future posting: Wabi-Sabi and Zen Buddhism.

The book comes from a Buddhist perspective, but you do not have to be a Buddhist to benefit from the books clear discussion of living in the moment and learning to reduce the stresses of modern life through meditation. For those who want a more focused discussion of specific aspects of Buddhism, W herever You Go There You Are, by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is a popular book on mindfullness and meditation.

Both are lovely introductions to the Dalai Lama's teachings and to Buddhism in general. It covers much of the same ground and goes on to talk about additional topics, such as Meditation, Buddhahood, Karma and more. The second book, An Open Heart: Practicing Compassion in Everyday Life, by the Dalia Lama, is longer. Its 115 small pages cover a lot of ground, but more serious students will want to read more. The first, The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom, is an elegant little book that can be easily carried in a purse or bag or even a pocket. I only have two books specifically by the Dalai Lama. So, this morning, when a postcard showing the Dalai Lama reading the newspaper fell out of a book I was packaging to mail out, I decided to do a posting on the books I have by or about the Dalai Lama and Buddhism.

I reveled in Kundun, the beautiful movie that tells the story of his younger life, and whenever possible I try and attend any lectures he is giving here in Vancouver. Over the years, I have taken a particular interest in his comings and goings and on his teachings. Now, I live in Vancouver, where the Dalai Lama has established an institute for the study of peace. I was there for one of those visits and watched it at home, live, on the local PBS station because my 3-year-old son would not have been able to stand the crush of the crowds. (Facts that puzzled me until I heard about the Dalai Lama connection.) The Dalai Lama visits on a regular basis, both on official visits and family visits. Bloomington is a lovely university town that has at least two Tibetan restaurants and a Tibetan Buddhist Center. We once lived in Bloomington, Indiana, the home of the Dalai Lama's brother and two of his nephews. So once we decided to switch to another composting system, we took the happy worms to the Maple Street Community Garden in Vancouver, who were delighted to have them. The good news is that taking care of worms didn't seem all that hard and we had great luck with the little wigglers. But for about three years, they turned a lot of organic waste that would have gone to the landfill into compost. They weren't that keen on potato peels or eggshells anyway and couldn't handle cooked food. So, when UBC announced that residents in faculty housing (which would be us) were eligible for Organic Waste recycling, the worms became redundant. Sadly, the spot that suited the worms best, was not the easiest spot to keep the worm "juice" under control. Then we moved to a townhouse and we had them on the patio. That was a pretty good spot because the worms were sheltered from the rain, but not in the house. For about two years, we kept the worms on the balcony of our son's room. Yes, at one time, I kept compost worms myself.

I did take a workshop here at UBC, where I live, but I didn't get a free book.)

(And, no, I never got a single copy of this book for free through a Vancouver Worm Composting Workshop. I can't remember for sure now how many copies of the book I've picked up here and there and then sold through DeepGreenBooks. I haven't checked my records carefully, but to the best of my ability to remember, Worms Eat My Garbage, in its various editions, is probably my bestselling book.
